Welcome to the Adventures of George and Heidi Avelino!
We are avid world travelers and hope to inspire others to travel through sharing our stories and travel tips. We would love to hear from you, so feel free to comment!
We started adventure traveling in 2004 with our first trip to Thailand. It was an amazing experience and one that we wanted to grow. In 2006 we returned to Thailand and started thinking of how we could travel throughout southeast Asia and the rest of the word. We realized the only way this could be done was to reduce our possessions.
Born and raised in California, we both yearned to see more of the world. In 2008 we decided to make our dream of travel to far off places a reality. First, we had to get rid of most of our possessions including our condo, and packed the rest of our belongings into a storage unit. Luckily, we had gracious friends and family who allowed us to stay in their homes, until it was time to depart on our first grand adventure. We purchased one-way plane tickets to Thailand packed our suitcases and we were off!
We started this travel log when we backpacked throughout South East Asia in 2008-2009. We continue to provide stories, photos, and travel tips for people interested in seeing the world!
Here is an overview of the places we have visited so far. There are still so many intriguing places to see, so this list will continue to grow!
Part 1: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia
The first part of our adventure went wonderfully well and we decided to continue on!
Part 2: Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and Indonesia
Then on a bit of a whim and due to extremely cheap plane tickets offered by Air Asia, we added China to our itinerary.
Part 3: China, Tibet, Nepal
Throughout our journey we met many like-minded travelers and were lucky to meet one such traveler who graciously invited us to visit her home country of Portugal. That inspired the next segment of our trip.
Part 4: England, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Ireland
Europe was a wonderful contrast and transition into heading back home to the United States.
After being back home in California for nine months, we realized that there were still places we were itching to see before settling down. So, in Spring of 2010 we headed off on our second adventure, this time for three months.
Our first destination was India, which I had been longing to visit, due to the intrigue of somewhere completely different from home.
Part 1: India
After a month and a half of circling India, it was time to fly to Poland for a friend’s wedding. Since we were in Poland anyway, what better time to see Eastern Europe?
Part 2: Eastern Europe (Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Slovenia, & Germany)
After our tour of Eastern Europe we returned to California to recuperate and focus on work.
In the fall of 2011 we moved to the Hawaiian Island of Oahu! It has been an amazing adventure living in the happiest place in the United States and we will certainly miss it, especially when we return to the mainland!
In July of 2012 we will head to Myanmar (Burma) or as George likes to call it ‘The Wild Wild East’! If you haven’t been following the news, Myanmar has recently had many positive political reforms which has suddenly opened the door to tourism. For years we and many other like minded travelers have boycotted Myanmar for their human rights issues. Now, things are changing rapidly for the better and we can’t think of a better time to visit Myanmar.
Where to next? … Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, India …
